The artist

Maikel van Emmerik (1978, Oss, the Netherlands) is a wildlife artist whose work is driven by a deep fascination with the character, emotion, and quiet strength of the natural world. His paintings go beyond realistic representation, seeking to capture those rare moments when a genuine connection is formed between the animal and the viewer.

The eyes of his subjects play a central role in this pursuit. Through a single gaze, Maikel strives to reveal each animal’s individuality and personality. Whether portraying a bird, mammal, or any other wild creature, he sees every animal as unique—each with its own story, presence, and beauty.

His love for wildlife and nature began in childhood during countless walks through nature reserves with his father. These early experiences laid the foundation for his passion for drawing and painting. What started as a childhood fascination gradually evolved into a lifelong artistic journey.

Alongside his career as an independent professional painter and decorator, Maikel continued to refine his skills as an artist. His daily experience with colour, materials, and craftsmanship has helped shape his highly realistic painting style, in which detail, atmosphere, and respect for the subject are at the heart of every work.

Inspired by both the beauty and the vulnerability of nature, Maikel aims to capture more than an animal’s physical appearance. His paintings seek to evoke the emotion of encountering a wild animal in its natural habitat—a rare and unforgettable experience that few people have the opportunity to witness up close.

With every painting, Maikel invites the viewer to slow down, look more closely, and reconnect with the natural world.
